Econex was established in 2005 due to the growing need for applied work in competition economics. Since then, the company has grown into a more diverse economics consultancy with not only extensive experience in competition cases, but also trade analysis and general applied economics.
Econex built its reputation by providing expert economic advice in a number of high profile mergers and complaints before competition authorities over the past few years. Some of the more recent highlights include the complaint against British American Tobacco, the merger between MTN and iTalk, the complaint against Senwes and the acquisition of KayaFM by Primedia. Apart from competition work we are also involved in trade matters including the analysis of tariffs, export taxes and anti-dumping duties.
As a result of our work in competition analysis we have had the opportunitiy to be involved in sectors of the South African economy where regulation plays an important role, e.g. the telecommunications, health and energy sectors. We use our existing knowledge of these sectors to analyse specific economic problems for some of the larger telecommunications, health and energy companies.
At the beginning of 2009 Econex moved its head office to Stellenbosch where, apart from the expertise of our permanent staff, we also draw on the intellectual knowledge base of Stellenbosch through our academic associates, affiliated to either the University of Stellenbosch or the Bureau for Economic Research (BER). As such, we can provide specialised economic analysis in any field of economics to our clients.
