Econex has established itself as a leading economics consultancy in the field of competition economics, delivering in-depth reports and analysis of all aspects of competition economics to its clients. Econex has also recently expanded its Competition Practice both in terms of specialist skills and the number of economists it employs.
This practice area is headed by Dr. Nicola Theron. She has been involved in competition economics since its initial introduction in South Africa, giving evidence in the first large merger to be decided before the Competition Tribunal in 1999 (Santam and Guardian National). Subsequently, Dr. Theron has provided economic reports and given expert evidence in a number of important mergers and complaints before the Competition Tribunal. Some of these include the mergers between Primedia and Kaya FM, Phodoclinics and Protector, MTN and iTalk, and the abuse of dominance complaints against British American Tobacco SA (BATSA) and Senwes. Dr. Theron also previously served as a part time member of the Competition Tribunal.
