Health

 
Health policy in South Africa is a dynamic and often controversial field. Econex has been the source of sound economic advice to many of the major players in the South African health sector.  Examples include the advise provided to New Clicks regarding its acquisition of PM&A as well as its litigation against the Department of Health’s regulation of medicine prices. More recently, Econex has been involved in the forcasting of medical aid coverage and a variety of analyses surrounding the proposed new National Health Insurance (NHI) system.

Telecoms

 
The telecommunications sector has experienced dramatic changes over the past few years, driven by both regulatory and technological considerations. On the regulatory front, the introduction of the new Electronic Communications Act (ECA) has changed the telecommunications landscape dramatically. The entrance of a second fixed-line operator, Neotel, has also created new opportunities and challenges.

Energy

 
In the energy sector, Econex has advised companies like BP and Masana on their role in opposing the Uhambo (Sasol/ Engen) merger and has also provided economic analysis for another large oil company on the determinants of petrol prices. Econex has also done a number of  demand forecasts for both the petrol and diesel markets in South Africa. Food Sector

 
The food sector – and the broader agricultural sector – received increased attention during recent year s due to the rapid increases in food prices. Econex has provided economic analyses to a number of players in this market, focussing on important sectors such as grain, dairy, fresh produce, etc. In the field of Competition Economics, Econex advised Pick ‘n Pay on two of its mergers, the first being the successful merger between Pick ‘n Pay and Score supermarkets.
